My Story

The card with no pen

It started a few years back. I pulled into my parents' driveway for a birthday visit, card already bought, and realised I didn't have a pen in the car to write in it. No phone reception either, and I hadn't even gone inside for their Wi-Fi yet, so I couldn't quickly search for anything or sort something out on the spot. I was just stuck, standing there with a blank card.

My parents love a physical birthday card — that's genuinely what makes the moment for them. They're not especially tech-savvy, but they do know how to open an email or a text message, and that stuck with me. A few birthdays went by before it properly clicked: there had to be a better way to give them that same feeling through something they could actually receive and open, and I couldn't find anything online that came close. So I sat down, started poking around, and taught myself how to build it.

The idea was simple: let anyone, anywhere, send a birthday message that includes a video, a voice note, or something they made themselves, wrapped around a proper message — and have it open with a little surprise. Schedule it ahead of time as a Time Capsule so you're never caught the way I was, scrambling for a card and a pen, or just send it the moment inspiration strikes and watch someone open something that makes them go "wow, I need to keep this."

A card with a few words is easy to forget. A message you can reopen, with a real video or someone's own effort attached, is something people go back to.

That's the real difference, I think. A physical card gets a glance, gets put in a drawer, and gets found again a year later in a pile with all the others. That's the whole point of WishCopy.

I thought building this would be simple. It was not — it turned into a genuinely detailed, intricate, logistical undertaking — but I've had real support from friends and family getting it this far, and I'm proud of where it's landed.

Why it's free

I made it free on purpose: no sign-up, no email collection, no accounts, nothing gating the core of it, so anyone in the world can just copy a message, edit it or build their own experience with stickers, photos, voice, or video, without a paywall in the way. The one thing that I added to it later does cost something small, that's Encore, a small optional extra for people who want to schedule a few bonus surprises after the fact ~ everything else on WishCopy stays exactly as free as it's always been.

From a phrase list to a birthday suite

What started as a simple phrase list grew, one feature at a time, into the fuller "birthday suite" it is today — because writing the message turned out to be only half the problem. The other half was making it feel like a moment rather than a text you skim and forget, which is what led to the Interactive Experiences, Group Wishes, and Party Invitations described below.

Group Wish came out of nowhere, honestly. I realised how often you're in a group — an office, a friend group, a family — where getting everyone to send their own separate card or message is a hassle, so I built a way for everyone to add to one shared wish instead. Party Invitations came later, once I realised that if this was going to be a real "birthday suite," it needed a way to actually invite people to the party too. Having kids also showed me how naturally this fits the way younger generations already communicate — shareable, quick, and with no subscriptions or sign-ups standing in the way of being creative.

It runs both ways

It works the other way too — it gives people who aren't as comfortable online, including a lot of seniors, an easy way to send something real across any distance, without postage, without buying a card, and without leaving the house. The sentiment runs both ways: from the person sending it, and from the person opening it.

How the wishes are written

Every one of the 600+ phrases in the library was written for WishCopy rather than pulled from a list of stock greetings. They are sorted into ten vibes (from heartfelt to cheeky) and three age groups, and each one is meant to read like something a real person would say to another real person, not a greeting-card template.

The library itself is human-written. The one place AI comes in is the optional AI Wish Generator (the Custom Vibe Creator), which uses Claude to draft a few phrases in a vibe you describe. Nothing is sent until you choose it, and you can edit it first. If you spot a phrase that misses the mark, tell me and I will fix it.

Schedule one as a Time Capsule that stays locked until a future date, or start a Group Wish — pick a backdrop, then have friends each add their own line, photo or sticker, and voice or video message before it's sent. Planning the party itself? Send a Party Invitation with the date, time and location — guests open a tap-to-reveal envelope and RSVP with a note, photo, sticker, voice or video message, all visible to you on a live dashboard. And if you want a wish to outlast its week online, Encore is an optional paid add-on that keeps it up for good and lets you schedule up to 12 dated follow-up notes on the same link over the year. There are also five optional paid reveals, The Shed, Zodiac, Birth Sky, Music Box and Pop-Up Book, each a one-time purchase for a single link with a free preview before you pay. And it isn't one-way: whoever opens a wish can send an emoji and a short note back, and it appears in your Sent Experiences. Outside of message-sending entirely, Birthday Reminders lets you keep a private list of the birthdays that matter. Each one goes straight into Google or Apple Calendar with a 3-day-early reminder built in — no account needed.
