My Story
It started a few years back. I pulled into my parents' driveway for a birthday visit, card already bought, and realised I didn't have a pen in the car to write in it. No phone reception either, and I hadn't even gone inside for their Wi-Fi yet, so I couldn't quickly search for anything or sort something out on the spot. I was just stuck, standing there with a blank card.
My parents love a physical birthday card — that's genuinely what makes the moment for them. They're not especially tech-savvy, but they do know how to open an email or a text message, and that stuck with me. A few birthdays went by before it properly clicked: there had to be a better way to give them that same feeling through something they could actually receive and open, and I couldn't find anything online that came close. So I sat down, started poking around, and taught myself how to build it.
The idea was simple: let anyone, anywhere, send a birthday message that includes a video, a voice note, or something they made themselves, wrapped around a proper message — and have it open with a little surprise. Schedule it ahead of time as a Time Capsule so you're never caught the way I was, scrambling for a card and a pen, or just send it the moment inspiration strikes and watch someone open something that makes them go "wow, I need to keep this."
That's the real difference, I think. A physical card gets a glance, gets put in a drawer, and gets found again a year later in a pile with all the others — a card with a few words is easy to forget. But a message you can reopen, with an actual video or someone's own creative effort attached to it, is something people actually go back to. That's the whole point of WishCopy.
I thought building this would be simple. It was not — it turned into a genuinely detailed, intricate, logistical undertaking — but I've had real support from friends and family getting it this far, and I'm proud of where it's landed.
I made it completely free on purpose: no sign-up, no email collection, no accounts, nothing gating it, so anyone in the world can just copy a message or build their own experience with stickers, photos, voice, or video, without a paywall in the way.
Group Wish came out of nowhere, honestly. I realised how often you're in a group — an office, a friend group, a family — where getting everyone to send their own separate card or message is a hassle, so I built a way for everyone to add to one shared wish instead. Party Invitations came later, once I realised that if this was going to be a real "birthday suite," it needed a way to actually invite people to the party too. Having kids also showed me how naturally this fits the way younger generations already communicate — shareable, quick, and with no subscriptions or sign-ups standing in the way of being creative.
It works the other way too — it gives people who aren't as comfortable online, including a lot of seniors, an easy way to send something real across any distance, without postage, without buying a card, and without leaving the house. The sentiment runs both ways: from the person sending it, and from the person opening it.
